For over three decades, AutoCAD has been the industry’s backbone. It still is. But if you’re working daily on large DWGs, coordinating across disciplines, or integrating with BIM environments, you’ve already seen the limit: performance no longer scales with hardware.
You can run a high-end workstation—multi-core CPU, NVMe storage, certified GPU—and still hit lag during REGEN, delays when switching layouts, or slowdowns navigating Xrefs.
That gap comes from one place: the core engine hasn’t evolved at the same pace as modern hardware.
There’s also a structural constraint behind it. AutoCAD still carries decades of legacy logic to ensure that a DWG created 20 or 30 years ago opens without friction today. That compatibility built trust—but it also locks performance behind outdated assumptions.
At this point, Autodesk needs to introduce a clear split: a High-Performance Mode (HPM) that prioritizes execution speed over full legacy support. Disable old rendering paths, OLE dependencies, and legacy behaviors—and let modern hardware do its job.

Core operations still rely heavily on single-thread execution:

2. The Graphics Pipeline Shift: DirectX 12 and OGS
One area where Autodesk is moving forward is the graphics stack.
The transition toward the One Graphics System (OGS) and DirectX 12 is not just technical housekeeping—it’s foundational.
DirectX 11 forces a significant amount of coordination through the CPU. DirectX 12 allows:
- Better multi-threaded rendering pipelines
- Reduced CPU overhead
- More direct GPU control
This is the base layer needed for handling large datasets properly.

A significant part of production time is still spent cleaning drawings.
Duplicate lines. Micro gaps. Broken hatches. Misaligned geometry.
These aren’t edge cases—they’re routine.
The reason is simple: AutoCAD treats geometry as coordinates, not as intent.
The current OVERKILL tool works on proximity, not meaning. It doesn’t understand continuity, alignment, or design logic.
What’s needed is a system that:
- Merges entities based on tolerance and alignment
- Recognizes continuity
- Applies cleanup rules automatically
A practical example: hatch boundary detection. Every experienced user has lost time chasing a 0.001 mm gap. A modern system should detect and auto-bridge micro gaps based on tolerance, not fail silently.

The standard fix is FLATTEN. The issue is what it actually does.
It doesn’t just project geometry—it often:
- Destroys Dynamic Block properties

This should not be a destructive fix.
A proper solution would operate at the database level, normalizing Z-values while preserving:

6. Database Bloat: The Stuff You Don’t See
Performance degradation is often caused by what’s inside the DWG—not what you see on screen.
Over time, files accumulate:
- DGN linetype contamination
- Corrupt scale lists
- RegApp leftovers
Standard cleanup helps, but it’s incomplete.
Even PURGE doesn’t always remove orphaned DGN data in older files. That’s why experienced users rely on deeper routines or external tools.
What’s missing is a native deep database scan, equivalent to the old DGN cleanup utilities:
- Detect hidden contamination
- Clean scale lists automatically
- Prevent reintroduction at import
This should be automatic—not a maintenance task.
7. Object Enablers and Proxy Geometry
One of the most underestimated performance issues comes from proxy objects.
Open a file from Civil 3D or Plant 3D without the proper Object Enablers, and AutoCAD falls back to proxy graphics.
The result:
- Slower interaction
- Heavier files
- Unpredictable behavior
Most users don’t immediately identify the cause.
A future version of AutoCAD should:
- Detect missing enablers proactively
- Handle proxy data more efficiently
- Reduce dependency on external vertical toolchains
Right now, this is a silent bottleneck in multi-discipline workflows.
8. LISP Modernization: Still Powerful, Still Stuck
AutoLISP remains one of AutoCAD’s strongest advantages.
But the development ecosystem hasn’t evolved.
VLIDE is outdated. Debugging is limited. And DCL (Dialog Control Language) hasn’t meaningfully evolved since the 90s.
This is no longer just a developer inconvenience—it’s a hardware issue. DCL struggles with high-DPI displays and 4K environments, making tools harder to use in modern setups.
The path forward is clear:

Production work requires speed and continuity, not navigation.
A more effective model would focus on:
- Cursor-based interaction (HUD)
- Command chaining based on usage patterns
- Minimal UI movement
If a user repeatedly executes OFFSET → TRIM → FILLET, the software should adapt to that sequence.
This is not about adding AI layers. It’s about removing friction from known workflows.
